The 193 Member States of the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in September 2015, with 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and 169 targets. This landmark agreement serves as a framework of global aspirations for the world to commit to addressing the most significant global challenges of our time and serves as a guide for the social, economic, and environmental actions everybody takes to achieve a sustainable future by the year 2030. They call upon all stakeholders - governments, businesses, civil society, academia, and the youth, to work together in creating solutions and ensure that no one is left behind.
Ten years after the launch of Sustainable Development Goals, much has been done to realize the goals, but we need to do more for us to live in a prosperous and peaceful 2030. In Asia and the Pacific, SDG Progress remains off-track, and the goals are slowly achieving or stagnating despite the efforts to attain them. According to the SDG Progress Report 2025 in Asia and the Pacific by UN-ESCAP, while our region shows a strong performance in achieving several goals and targets, progress in Global Goals such as Responsible Consumption and Production (Goal 12), Quality Education (Goal 4) and decent work and economic growth (Goal 8) are progressing too slowly, while regression in Climate Action (Goal 13) is very alarming.
Singapore has established itself as a world leader in sustainable development by synchronizing its national strategies with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Singapore Green Plan 2030 acts as the nation detailed blueprint to promote sustainability in critical areas such as climate initiatives, urban resilience, and the green economy, through policy making and community involvement. Singapore has achieved notable progress in Global Goals such as SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-Being), and SDG 13 (Climate Action).
One of the key instruments to ensure that we will achieve the goals by 2030 is to educate our stakeholders, including local and regional governments, private sectors, academe, and civic organizations, and equip them with the necessary tools and knowledge to contribute to the progress of the Global Goals. Furthermore, the United Nations emphasizes the role of policymakers in addressing the factors driving the achievement of goals.
Our involvement at the 12th Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development and Asia-Pacific Business Forum revealed that there are a lot of gaps that we need to address and opportunities that we need to grasp through economic cooperation, community participation, and cultural exchange. As today’s leaders, we must spearhead the movement of transformation. Equipped with passion, and creativity, we can bring about generational change, challenge the status quo, and secure a more prosperous and peaceful future for everyone.
